Death of Arthur
An evening-length setting of a medieval Arthur romance for the early-music ensemble Alkemie.
Premiere — Alkemie Early Music Ensemble · Arete Gallery, Brooklyn NY · 2019-11-23
An evening-length piece for the medieval ensemble Alkemie — vielles, voices, percussion, and early winds. I set the 14th-century stanzaic Morte Arthur, weaving spoken text, monophonic songs, motets, and instrumental writing to tell the story of Arthur, Guenevere, and Lancelot. Old words, new music, on period instruments. It premiered in a show titled “Beautee & Bountee.”
I made it with Alkemie and the Five Boroughs Music Festival, who presented it in November 2019, with performances at Arete Gallery in Brooklyn and the Noble Maritime Collection on Staten Island.
