How Deep is the Ocean?

“The Sea” was an Oracle Hysterical show that the whole band wrote different parts of. I wrote two of them: How Deep is the Ocean? and the third movement of the concerto that opened the show. The songs are built from texts by seafarers, explorers, and aquatic fabulists — Homer, Shakespeare, John Donne, the Book of Jonah, and others.

We made it with the Boston string orchestra A Far Cry, who commissioned it. It premiered at A Far Cry’s home base, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and was later presented by the Celebrity Series of Boston.
