Journals

An ongoing set of short pieces for guitar and cello, written like diary entries and titled with dates. I started them in 2017, writing on planes and trains while I was touring and teaching more than I ever had — a return to the personal after years of work that didn’t feel like mine. Jordan Dodson plays guitar and Gabriel Cabezas plays cello.

Each piece has its own name and date — “Lovesick,” “Papakata,” “Utah,” “Exit Row,” “Homesick,” and a growing list beyond them. They don’t need separate pages; they live here as a set and gather on the records. Three books exist so far, with more volumes written but not yet recorded. There are also versions for marimba and bass clarinet, and for marimba and cello. Book I came out on Long Echo in 2021 — see the album Journals, Vol. 1.
